Grapat

Grapat brand logo

Grapat is a small family business based in the beautiful countryside of Catalunya, Spain. Grapat create open ended resources to inspire free and autonomous play. Their only premise is to let children play, slowly, without time limits.

The resources are made by hand following traditional processes. The wood Grapat uses comes from sustainable forests and is a source of inspiration. It is robust, soft and hard, it is warm, it sounds and smells good! Natural water based dyes allow the wood veins to be seen and finishes are made with waxes and oils of vegeatable origin. Grapat have totally eliminated plastic from their packaging to contribute to the reduction of waste on the planet.

Grapat Sets promote creative and divergent thinking. Free play allows children to connect with their deepest desire and develop activity they need. The unstructured and open-ended play objects do not have a correct or incorrect way to be used, so work without instructions. Grapat materials are so open that they accompany the child in all their learning phases. The Nins, rings, coins, mates and other pieces are transformed into a symbolic materials for the creation of stories and the construction of small worlds, in addition to serving for mathematical, language and sensory games.

Grapat's Loose Parts are intended as a compliment to the Sets, although they can also be used independently. Based on the theory of the loose parts of Simon Nicholson in 1971, Grapat offer rich play objects, not structured and open-ended that allows the child to combine, align, carry, transport, stack, classify in different ways. The loose parts allow children to redesign and reformulate their thinking. They can be combined with objects found in nature e.g. sticks, stones, shells, flowers and leaves to promote a connection with the natural world around us. The loose parts can be manipulated in multiple possibilities. Because there is no specific way to use them there is not a right or wrong way to play with them.

The Grapat Heuristic Game is composed of different types of elements with different shapes and characteristics so that children can explore and manipulate autonomously and freely. They can combine, relate, match, cover, fill, empty, rotate, stack and so more! The Heuristic sets allow babies to explore the world around them safely.
