Science & Technology
“We especially need imagination in science. It is not all mathematics, nor logic, but it is somewhat beauty and poetry.”- Maria Montessori
Science is a way of investigating, understanding and explaining our natural world, physical world and the wider universe. Young children are natural scientists as they explore. They can be fascinated by a wide range of topics particularly about the world around them.
The Living World strand is about living things and how they interact with each other and the environment. The emphasis is on the biology of New Zealand, including sustainability of New Zealand’s unique fauna and flora and distinctive ecosystems. It is a rich source of resources for both Enviroschools (www.enviroschools.org.nz) and Garden-to-Table programmes (www.gardentotable.org.nz).
The Planet Earth and Beyond strand includes World, New Zealand, stars and Matariki, weather and ecology resources.
The Physical World strand includes light, electricity, magnetism, forces and motion, weight, volume, temperature, length, time and bubble resources.
The Material World strand includes polymers, changes and bubbles & density.
